I heard this gentleman, Chris Morgan, interviewed last week on NPR and was amazed by his dedication to the bears of the world. Can’t wait to see this video, BearTrek. Check him out and his other great adventures on his website.
the Jackalope
So, being the curious person I am, I had to look up the origin of the so-called mythological jackalope, the fearsome rabbit with antlers with a fondness for whiskey. Turns out, it was a hoax perpetrated during the early 1800s. Who knew?
Apparently you can purchase your very own mounted jacklope trophy from Cabela’s (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Mounted-Jackalope-Buck/748133.uts) But then you wouldn’t have the trill of hunting one yourself, which I highly recommend. The excitement is comparable to that of a snipe hunt I went on once as a girl scout. If you’ve never done it, add it to your bucket list right now.
Happy hunting!
(Yes, there is a jackalope cameo in Operation Grizzly Camp, just for fun.)
Brown Bear, Denali National Park, Alaska
Four years ago I was in Alaska for the fourth time. This trip was extra special for two reasons: my parents came along and it was September which meant fall color. Wow, the tundra glows in oranges and reds. There’s nothing like it. And to see a bear standing amid the blaze was breathtaking. My only regret was being stuck on the Denali park school bus, shooting out the window. But sometimes, you take what you can get. I would’ve hopped off the bus right there, but park rules don’t allow passengers to disembark near wildlife. A good policy. Still, all in all, a sight worth every breath.

Norwegian goat, Flåm, Norway
Two years ago today I was in Norway, enjoying the fresh air and spectacular countryside. During a bike ride down the mountainside and through this valley, we came across a herd of goats, all lying in the middle of the road. They didn’t want to budge to let us through. One tried to chew my tire. They’ll eat anything apparently. It was a joyful encounter and one of my favorite images from the trip.
This image is the cover of my book, Norway: A Photographic Collection and the experience was the inspiration for setting my book, Operation Orca Rescue there.

Ravens: As Smart as Chimps?
In my research for Operation Grizzly Camp, I came across an interesting study on raven brains. Seems they exhibit rational behavior at levels comparable to apes. Fascinating.

Speaking at the MRA Summer Conference
So honored to be invited to speak at the Michigan Reading Association Summer Conference this week.
My talk will be:
Teaching Tolerance and Diversity in a Xenophobic World
Encouraging open minds is vital, not only to help students embrace diversity in others, but see differences as strengths in themselves. Participants in this session will learn specific strategies for using story and characters as a springboard for classroom discussion, several classroom activities, and to provide an open door to those who are struggling with these issues.
Maybe I’ll see you there!
